New Romance

BY GAVIN MANLEY

Growing up in Ireland in the 1980s, there were few opportunities to tap into the latest fashion trends. There were magazines of course, but in an age when the internet was still a distant dream, we relied on a weekly chart television show on the BBC known as Top of the Pops for our style cues. This long-running, Thursday evening staple featured the hottest musical acts of the time — performers whose fashion choices each week, influenced an entire generation of consumers on what to wear.

Among them, the so-called ‘New Romantics’, which included groups such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, ABC, and others, were remarkable for their flamboyant sense of style — as much as the Top 40 hits they produced. Layers of silk scarves and sashes, elaborate brooches and lapel pins, gender fluid neckwear and hats were the order of the day.

Today, almost 40 years on, this proclivity for exuberant style in menswear has returned — albeit perhaps with a little less gusto this time around. From chunky jewelry to brooches that make a statement, ribbon ties to commando-sole footwear, Ac Magazine looks at some of the key pieces that epitomize this popular trend in men’s accessories.

ORTUU, Lobster Brooch, $150

In contrast to the punk era of the late 1970s, New Romantic style was defined by an insatiable desire to dress up at every opportunity. Creative accessory choices were often added as a final flourish to complete the look. Today, oversized lapel pins and brooches for men have made a comeback. Case in point — this statement piece from ORTUU. Symbolizing discovery and personal growth, this Lobster brooch is handcrafted from silver embroidery, faux ruby stones and bugle beads.

Nandanie, Printed Grace Evening Bow, $195

Flamboyant neckwear choices for men graced the red carpet at this years’ award shows in Hollywood, with skinny bowties, neckerchiefs and even tieless ties making an appearance. Sure, this jaunty floral piece from Nandanie is primarily intended as a women’s fashion accessory, but it’s not difficult to imagine a modern dandy — like say Harry Styles — sporting such an adventurous look. Pre-tied and adjustable, Nandanie’s Printed Grace bow is made from cotton and luxurious silk.

Cole Haan, Penny Loafer, $158

Barry Keoghan, the actor nominated for his work in The Banshees of Inisherin was widely lauded for his fashion-forward outfit at the 2023 Golden Globes. Keoghan wore an eye-catching powder-blue Louis Vuitton tuxedo paired with commando-sole shoes (also Louis Vuitton). For casual observers, this is not a million miles from Cole Haan’s updated Penny Loafer which was launched recently. According to the brand’s website, this “timeless silhouette” has been given an upgrade thanks to its “uber-comfortable and lightweight construction.

What’s more, these shoes will likely appeal to the man who prizes versatility, as they’re equally presentable for both formal occasions and everyday wear.

Zales, Made in Italy Men’s Bracelet, $4,179

Embracing the ostentatious was an attitude as much as a fashion choice for the New Romantics, and nothing makes a greater statement than chunky gold jewelry. This ‘Made in Italy’ men’s Cuban curb chain bracelet by Zales is constructed from 10ct warm gold and is secured with a box clasp.

HSR+Chris Ploof, Kuro Damascus Steel & Gold Pendant Necklace, $1,064

Originality is one of the hallmarks of New Romantic style. Certainly there are some recurring stylistic themes, but there is great scope for creative expression. No two pieces in this collection by HSR (Heavy Stone Rings) and Chris Ploof are the same. This Kuro Damascus Steel and Gold Pendant Necklace is made from responsibly-sourced materials which are forged in Massachusetts and finished in Utah, and each piece in this collection is custom made once an order is placed.

Kay Jewelers, Men’s Textured Signet Ring, $99

Rings such as these have been used throughout history to seal private documents. Coming from the Latin word signum meaning “sign”, signet rings date back to Ancient Egypt, and have long been associated with power and prestige — making them the perfect accoutrement for New Romantic style. This bold men's signet ring from Kay Jewelers features a distinctive textured pattern and is made from yellow ion-plated stainless steel.
