New Romance
BY GAVIN MANLEY
Growing up in Ireland in the 1980s, there were few opportunities to tap into the latest fashion trends. There were magazines of course, but in an age when the internet was still a distant dream, we relied on a weekly chart television show on the BBC known as Top of the Pops for our style cues. This long-running, Thursday evening staple featured the hottest musical acts of the time — performers whose fashion choices each week, influenced an entire generation of consumers on what to wear.
Among them, the so-called ‘New Romantics’, which included groups such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, ABC, and others, were remarkable for their flamboyant sense of style — as much as the Top 40 hits they produced. Layers of silk scarves and sashes, elaborate brooches and lapel pins, gender fluid neckwear and hats were the order of the day.
Today, almost 40 years on, this proclivity for exuberant style in menswear has returned — albeit perhaps with a little less gusto this time around. From chunky jewelry to brooches that make a statement, ribbon ties to commando-sole footwear, Ac Magazine looks at some of the key pieces that epitomize this popular trend in men’s accessories.
Nandanie, Printed Grace Evening Bow, $195
Flamboyant neckwear choices for men graced the red carpet at this years’ award shows in Hollywood, with skinny bowties, neckerchiefs and even tieless ties making an appearance. Sure, this jaunty floral piece from Nandanie is primarily intended as a women’s fashion accessory, but it’s not difficult to imagine a modern dandy — like say Harry Styles — sporting such an adventurous look. Pre-tied and adjustable, Nandanie’s Printed Grace bow is made from cotton and luxurious silk.
What’s more, these shoes will likely appeal to the man who prizes versatility, as they’re equally presentable for both formal occasions and everyday wear.
